NEW COUNCILLOR
HAMILTON BOROUGH SERGEANT D. I. GATE The appointment of Sergeant D. I. Gate to the Hamilton Borough Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr J. E. Tidd was approved at a meeting of the council last night. The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, in moving that Sergeant Gate be appointed, said that the municipal elections would be held in May next year and the cost of a by-election would be approximately £2OO. Sergeant Gate was the leading unsuccessful candidate in the previous elections in 1938. Sergeant Gate, who was a resident of Hamilton before enlisting in 1914 and who has lived here ever since his return in 1918. has taken an active interest in Hamilton affairs. He is an ex-president of the Hamilton Master Builders’ Association and is president of the Waikato Returned Soldiers’ Association. He has twice contested Hamilton municipal elections. At present he is a staff sergeant attached to the No. 4 (Hamilton) military area as an instructor.
