HOME DEFENCE COMPANY WEEK-END MANOEUVRES (Special 10 Times) MATAMATA, Monday Tactical manoeuvres over a wide territory were carried out by the Matamata Home Defence Company during the week-end. An enemy force was supposed to have landed at Thames and to be advancing on Hcrahora and Arapuni, via Matamata. The highway was mined and destroyed at Waharoa and the invaders struck through Peria in an attempt to pick up the Peria-Hinuera road, giving them access to Hora- ; hora. Two platoons of the Defence Company took the part of the attacking , force and the remaining three platoons comprised the defence, : whose instructions were to hold up ' the enemy and fight a rearguard action until reinforcements arrived j from Hamilton and Cambridge. The exercises, which occupied four and a-half hours, were under the j command of Mr E. J. Mclntyre, : Adjutant of the Company. Mr R. C. Morgan had charge of the attacking force, and Mr R. J. Bennett, Company C. 0.. acted as referee. At the conclusion of the exercises Mr Bennett announced that forms were available for enrolment in the Home Guard, and enrolments would be proceeded with during the week.
