FITNESS IN TIME OF WAR j MATAMATA SEASON OPENS * (Special to Times) MATAMATA, Monday. ! The tennis season was opened in j Matamata on Saturday, the Waikato ' Tennis Association and the Matamata j Club holding a combined ceremony 1 at the club’s courts. There was a i large gathering of players from all parts of the district, although petrol restrictions caused the attendance to be slightly smaller than usual. Welcoming visitors on behalf of the Waikato East Association, the president, Mr S. Macken. said that sport generally would probably have a lean time while the war was on. and urged club members to carry on while their men members were away. Concentration on sport by the younger players was now of more importance than ever, in view of the necessity for all to keep physically fit. Mr H. G. Keeley. president of the Matamata Club, appealed to younger players to take an interest in the ; executive side of the game with a view to fitting themselves for controlling positions in the future. He \ called on Mrs Keeley to play the j opening ball of the season. Nearly 100 players took part in a j Yankee tournament, the winners being: Mrs B. Stone.and Miss W. Stanley, equal, 42 points; H. Le Quesne, 46 points. An exhibition match, G. Ross and Miss N. Beverley v. J. W. Howes and Miss M. Beverley, was won by the first-named pair, 6—3.
