“South of Pago Pago,” starring Jon Hall. Frances Farmer and Victor McLaglen, is a colourful, romantic story concerning the strange adventures of Bucko Larson and Ruby Taylor, who undertake an expedition to a fabulous pearl bed “South of Pago Pago.” Overcome by greed and lust for wealth, Larson uses all kinds of foul methods to enslave the natives on the island of Manoa so that they will dive for pearls Kehane, the young and handsome son of the island chief, falls in love with Ruby, never dreaming that sh< is a Singapore cafe girl. How Ruby manages to save the day for the islanders and to free them from Larson’s cunning and violence provides the picture with an ending packed with thrills and drama. The principal location site during filming of “South of Pago Pago” was on the famous Kona coast on the island of Hawaii, the largest in the group. Here 2000 natives were employed, 300 canoes were assembled and an entire native village was built on the beach near the foaming surf. ROXY THEATRE “The Man in the Iron Mask,” a screen version of the thrilling story by Dumas, and “Flying Deuces,” with Laurel and Hardy, will be screened today. “ Man in the Iron Mask ” is romantic drama at its most exciting, dealing with a period in history when sensational things happened. The Dumas story from which the film was adapted has been widely read, and the bringing of the characters to the screen is a great achievement. Louis Hayward, Joan Bennett and Warren William have the leading roles and are supported by a great cast. “ Flying Deuces ” brings back the popular Laurel and Hardy in one of their funniest comedies. Their experiences as members of the Foreign Legion are very funny. “ London’s Reply to German Claims ” gives the true story of the damage done by bombing raids.
