CAMBRIDGE RED CROSS
MONTHLY REPORT One of the principal functions of the Red Cross being to care for sick and wounded soldiers, the work of the society has not, of late, been very much to the fore, as the comfort and entertainment of troops in training, provided for by patriotic and fighting services committees, is claiming the immediate attention oi the public. Proof, however, that the future needs of our soldiers are not being overlooked was given at the recent monthly committee meeting of the Cambridge sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, when the various subcommittee reports were presented. Steady activity on the part of the sewing committee and willing workers has resulted in cases of hospital garments and bandages being continually consigned to headquarters. Many members have gained home nursing certificates and (in co-opera-tion with the St. John Ambulance) first aid certificates and have thereby fitted themselves to form a voluntary aid detachment if the need arises. At a recent home nursing examination all the candidates were successful. Some passed the elementary section while others completed a refresher course and gained intermediate certificates. Votes of thanks were passed to Dr. H. C. Tod and Sister G. M. Swears who examined the candidates, and to the lecturers, Mesdames Pegg, Tod, lan Smith and Miss C. J. Ellis, as well as to the supervisor. Miss G. L. Brann.
The Cambridge sub-centre is indebted to the different organisations who have controlled the Red Cross shop every Friday, among recent bodies in charge of the shop being: The Hora Hora Institute, the Cambridge Croquet Club, Trinity Guild, Pukeroro district. Leamington Croquet Club, Lyceum Club. Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Ladies’ Golf Club and the Roto-o-rangi Red Cross sub-centre. Co-operating with the Lady Galway Guild, the sewing committee has devoted much time to refugee clothing and at present particular attention is being paid to the needs of the victims of the London air raids. In response to repeated requests motor mechanics classes have been commenced and a large number of students have enrolled. The committee gratefully acknowledges donations handed in from time to time, among recent donors being: The Lyceum Club Bridge Circle, Young People’s Dance, Mrs S. Armstrong and Mr J. Searle.
