GIRLS ON SERVICE
INSTRUCTIONS TO GUNNERS GOOD RESULTS ACHIEVED USE OF KINE-THEODOLITE (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 30. 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 29 Some women members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service may be seen proudly wearing a gunner’s lanyard. This distinction they have earned by teaching anti-aircraft gunners the use of the “ kine-theodolite,” an instrument used to assist in accurate shooting. When anti-aircraft guns are firing at targets towed by aeroplanes the kine-theodolite picks up errors which the unaided eye is not able to see. Operators of this machine need a knowledge of geometry, a working acquaintance with logarithms, some practice in photography, and a natural delicacy of touch. These qualifications are possessed by some Auxiliary Territorial Service girls, and it is found that they quickly learn about the instrument and make excellent instructors.
