GRAND CARNIVAL DANCE
ST. MARY’S SOCIAL CLUB END OF SUCCESSFUL SEASON To mark the closing of its 1940 season the St. Mary’s Social Club held a grand carnival dance last Wednesday. The committee, responsible for so many jolly dances throughout the year, was untiring in its efforts to make the night a memorable one, and the throng of dancers present was evidence of the club’s popularity. The hall had been charmingly decorated with multi - coloured streamers, Chinese lanterns, and greenery, intermingled with clusters of crimson rhododendrons. During the evening the Rev. Father M. J. Bleakley, in a short address, thanked all those who had worked so assiduously in the interests of the young people. He also took the opportunity of presenting, on behalf of the club, a small memento to two committee members, Messrs G. Barnett and Q. Casey, who are about to encamp with the Territorials. The club’s best wishes were extended to Messrs T. Collins and D. Flynn, who are also to encamp. Excellent music was provided by Critchley’s orchestra, Mr P. Ryan making a popular and efficient master of ceremonies. Among those present were:—Mesdames W. B. Fearon, navy and white shansa crepe; Richards, navy and white figured flat crepe; Hill, floral crepe-de-chine; J. Dunleavy, black taffeta poult and cerise spray; Austin, black moss satin and scarlet spray; G. Gebbie, navy and white faille; Rossiter (Ohaupo), wineberry flat crepe; J. Richards, turquoise ripple ninon; J. Bolton, figured flat crepe; Goodwin, black sequined taffeta; L. F. Casey, flowered faille. Misses Pat Jew, azure blue ripple ninon; Norah Flynn, lagoon blue cire taffeta; Rita Hassen, ice blue taffeta; Lucy Devitt, coral georgette; Marie Casey, rose dust embossed satin; Jean Davies, Nile green ninon and diamante trimming; Phyl Needham, powder blue and cyclamen georgette; Gwen Fox, figured flat crepe; Cec. Roach, cherry flowered faille; Kathleen Jordan, gold poult; Edna Rossiter (Ohaupo), scarlet georgette; Rose Stuart, birch green taffeta; Mercia Hill, black and white taffeta; Rosemary Bushell, briar rose taffeta.
