FINE SPIRIT
LONDON UNDAUNTED ASSISTING ACTIVE FORCES STRONG MORAL SUPPORT No doubt it is the avowed intention and purpose of all members of the British Empire to assist their active fighting forces in the successful prosecution of the war, and to see that no stone is left unturned to see that they are provided with the facilities to strike every possible blow at the enemy. In many instances great sacrifices in wealth and property, often the result of many years’ hard work, have been devoted to the war effort, and this support must have a great effect on the way in which our armed forces attack the task which faces them. To know that behind them there is the support of every Briton gives moral strength at a time when even the staunchest spirit might flag and serves to spur them on in the fight for democratic freedom. Although they have taken up the duties of active service there is no reason why the task should be left entirely to them. Every shoulder should be put to the wheel to force the Empire war machine on its course. Great Object Lesson Perhaps no greater object lesson in moral strength could be given than the spirit in which Londoners have faced the terrors which have been let loose upon them during the last few weeks. With many of their homes and dreams tumbling about them they have won the admiration of all peace-loving peoples by the manner in which they have decided to carry on until the totalitarian forces have been suppressed and peace once more settles on the world. They have great faith in the men whose task it is to protect them, and many are the deeds of heroism which have been performed by Londoners in spite of the suffering imposed on them by the Nazi raiders.
To show how much other sections of the Empire appreciate the fine spirit of London, which must have a heartening effect on the active services, the Dominions have sent many gifts to relieve the distress of the civilian population. New Zealand has already sent £IOO,OOO to the Lord Mayor of London’s fund and the amount is being met by public subscription.
