A Tiny Tale

THE FIELD MICE MOVE “ JYTY DEAR, my dear,” cried Mr Field Mouse, rushing into Mouse Hole late one evening, “ we must move at once! ” “ The farmer wants this field for ploughing, and all our cousins are looking for fresh homes. Come.” “ No,” answered Mrs Mouse, “ I just can’t wash seven little Field Mouse faces, and brush seven little Field Mouse tails again tonight! We’ll move early in the morning.” She was very sure about that, and however hard Mr Field Mouse begged. she would not give way an inch. So at last he said, “ Very well, I’ll get up early in the morning and find a home while you are giving the children their breakfast.” He set off with the greatest hopes of finding a new home in two waves of his tail, so to speak, but soon wished he had started on his search several days before, since each bird and animals he asked said, “ I’m so sorry—l had a hole that would just have been splendid, but I let it yesterday!”

They all told him to try “at the next hollow tree,” or “ on the left of the gate across there,” and he asked so often about “ a hole for a lady and gentleman field mouse and their seven children ” that he began to wonder if he’d be able to squeak anything else for the rest of his life. He was looking rather a sad little animal when he came to where a fat white and brown rabbit sat in front of her home, v,\th a large family running round, and he asked her the same question.
