KEEPING RAIDERS AWAY
FIGHTING OVER LONDON ADAPTABILITY OF PEOPLE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 26 London’s anti-aircraft barrage was splashing the sky with metal ceaselessly for hours to-night while German raiders were doing their utmost to reach the central area of the capital. The wisdom of millions .who have readjusted their routine to enable the winding up of the day’s doings before dark was justified when the guns blazed almost as soon as daylight had left the sky. The raiders opened with their 19th successive night attack with the usual battle with the ground forces. They first attempted to come into Central London from the north-west and south. Single aeroplanes, apparently testing the vigilance of the guns, took no chances with the capital’s mammoth battery and flew higher than usual in an effort to evade the terrific response from below. Londoners underground felt the city shaking as the guns gave a hot reception to the early scouts. Raiders Over Wales Night raiders appeared over Wales the north-west of England and the Midlands. Many bombs were dropped, particularly on a north-west town, which experienced its 121st raid since the outbreak of war. An Air Ministry communique issued this morning states: “Fires were started in several parts of the London area, but the damage was considerably restricted by prompt action by the fire-fighting and other A.R.P. services. Damage was also caused by high-explosive bombs and casualties are reported, some of which have proved fatal. “Bombs were dropped during the night in south-east and north-west England and in Wales, causing small material damage, but a few casualties.”
