LOCAL AND GENERAL

Daffodil Show Success So large were the attendances at the Marton Daffodil Show that the gross proceeds for two days were approximately £270. Tribute of Respect As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Dr. M. M. Hockin, who took a keen interest in Waikato cricket activities, a tribute was paid at the annual meeting of the Waikato Cricket Association last night by the chairman, Mr A. E. Sandford, and those present observed a moment’s silence. Clipper’s Flight Pan American Airways Honolulu Clipper arrived at Auckland at 2.29 yesterday afternoon on the conclusion of her flight from San Francisco. Captain W. J. Barrows was in command. The stage from Noumea was covered in 6h 59m. The Clipper is scheduled to leave tomorrow morning on her return to San Francisco. Light Rain Some light rain fell in Hamilton during the night and up till 9 o’clock this morning .05in had fallen. Much more rain, however, is urgently required as gardens are beginning to show the effects of the dry spell. A heavy fall now, with the warm temperature, would greatly stimulate growth. Police Presentation Members of the detective staff at the Auckland central police station made a farewell presentation yesterday to Detective A. Moore, who has been transferred to Hamilton after 12 years in the city. Sub-Inspector S. G. Hall, on behalf of the staff, handed Mr Moore a china afternoontea set, a case of silver spoons and an electric jug. Mr Hall and other officers spoke of Mr Moore’s good qualities as an officer, and the cordial relationships he had established in the service and among the public.

Representative Cricket Ground A suggestion was put forward at the meeting of the Waikato Cricket Association last night by Mr A. E. Gibbons to the effect that the management committee should approach the Hamilton Domain Board with a view to laying down a cricket pitch at Hinemoa Park, to be used for representative matches only. Hinemoa Park is an enclosed area, and the takings, it is estimated, would be appreciably higher than at Seddon Park, where the ground is open at all sides. The area in question would be ideal for cricket, and the facilities offering would be well received by players and spectators.
