WAIKATO GOLF

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY

PROGRESS OF CLUB TROPHIES NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “ Fyfe Scott.”) Last week-end was rather an important one for the majority or local golfers, as the Big event in any club is always me Utib championships. improving players through the year gencrnll.\ look forward

to Jh* s event eagerly, and' Ja.-t wi ek 11 ie qualifying and llrst two rounds ol this ‘•vent were played at Loehiel, while tiie semifinals of the club championships at conditions for play were'ideal’, and' at""/. Andrews iiho fairways and greens left nothing to be desired. Lociiiel was showing baneflclal effect rrom the excellent spring growth and there was real pieadrl'w lU 11Utl in playiny ' will » or Eric Etheridge, who has been playing some very line golf of late, headed the senior division in the qualifying round at Loehiel with a brilliant 72, but strangely enough played nowhere near this form on the following day and a llrst-class sensation was nearly provided when L. Brown, on the 9 mark took him to the 18th hole. In the afternoon, Etheridge’s golf did not Improve and a longer marker than By own, in J. Woolnough, had Etheridge in trouble, being 2 up on him at the turn. Etheridge finally prevailed by 3 and 2, but had Woolnough been able to get clown a few holeable putts on the return half he would certainly have upset everyone’s calculations, as only eight qualiry in the senior division at Loehiel, this leaves Etheridge in the final against S. Cuthbertson. who defeated P. Lee in the morning and N. Ross in the afternoon. The Intermediate Division In the intermediate division Bill ScarTe was on good form, and with an 85 headed the qualifiers and weni on to win his way to tiie semi-finals by defeating N. McConnell and C. Sutcliffe. B. Vickers also qualified well with 87 and in the match play was too good for S. J. Walker and G. Grace. Another to enter the semifinals was F. Cramp, at the expense of 11. J. Hall and B. C. O’Connor. These wins should compensate Cramp for his loss in the final of the Herbert Cup, where he went down to McGowan on the 18th. The other semi-finalist is D. Hemi. Hemi beat Seyb by 2 and 1, in the morning, but had a close call against J. Jones in the afternoon, and only got the verdict on the 19th. There were also some very close games in the junior division and L. Montelth, after accounting for Y’endall In the morning, had a battle royal with A. Cowley in the afternoon, and just won on the 19th. The case was the same with G. Absolum, who, after beating a favourite in P. Gwynne in the morning, was taken to the 19th in the afternoon by A. Ensoll. The other semi-finalists are S. Bennett and R. Sutherland. Sutherland defeated G. Anchor and L. Hutton.

Events at St. Andrews At St. Andrews, as was generally anticipated, Glading meets Etheridge in the final of the club’s senior championship. This game will be played this week over 36 holes and should prove to he a good game. In the semi-finals Etheridge accounted for Seccoinbe and was par figures when the game finished. Glading, against Kelly, won by 3—2 but was not playing good golf. However, on the following day he had a round or 7 2 which looks as if his lapse of form over tiie last fortnight is over. The finalists in the intermediate division are W. Coltman anil H. F. Blackle. Coltman is a newcomer to Waikato golf and although on a 10 mark now, was on six when playing round the Greymouth course. In his semi-final game he was round in 8 4 and defeated Bill Gunn. Blackle’s opponent In the semi-final was IS*. Ross. This game was noteworthy for the phenomenal long putts that were holed by both players. Ross missed an easy one at a crucial time, however. This was at the 12th, where he wanted it to be 2 up. After this he also made a bad mistake at the 14th. Up nicely for one, with Blackie having failed to get up. he took five to hole out, where as Blackie pitched up, and with the regulation two putts, got a win. The game was eventually won by Blackie on the 19th. In the junior division, George Wright wa-3 1 up on b. Edmonds, going To the 18th but, bunkered there, he lost this and was eventually beaten on the. 20th. Fenton McCullagh was a bit too good for Brownless, and this leaves McCullough and Edmonds in the final. Bankers and Lawyers On Monday, Dominion Day, the Bankers and Lawyers had a day out and played their annual championship at St. Andrews. The weal her was perfect and the large crowd who participated had a very enjoyable day. Mick Ross, of the Loehiel Club, carried off the championship with 83 and Bu, while hrs club mate. Ben Chalmers. was only one stroke behind with 81 and 83. Chalmers appeared to have this event well in his keeping, and with and 81 in the morning, he was out In 39 in the afternoon. His 4 4 strokes for the second half was not like his usual scoring. however. J. IN'. Iline, of To Kuiti, actually had the best gross round of the morning, but as the saying goes, was never sighted in the afternoon. His club mate, E. A. Brainsby, however, reversed proceedings and after a poor morning round returned a 37 Stableford card In the afternoon from a handicap of 8 and won this event. A very popular win on the day was A. E. McDonald’s, an S 4 and 87 collecting for hirn the B grade championship and a trophy.
