MAORI HOSTEL FUNDS
(To the Editor) Sir, —From letters recently published in your columns, it would appear that there may be some misconception as to the terms on which the Government is prepared to grant assistance for the building of a Maori hostel at Hamilton. The Government has agreed, subject to the necessary validating legislation being passed, to grant a £1 for £1 subsidy up to a maximum of £1375. The subsidy is not being offered conditional on the full amount of £1375 being raised, but owing to increases in building costs, the society hopes to be able to take advantage to the full of the Government’s offer. At the time, the funds in hand amounted to £1275, but now owing to the generous support of local authorities and the public, about 50 per cent of the balance has been donated or promised. The society desires to thank your correspondents for their sympathetic support.—l am, etc., J. W. WALDRON, Hamilton, September 25.
