STRONG MORALE

UNDAUNTED LONDONERS NAZI WAR OF NERVES FAILS ASSISTANCE FROM DOMINION The Hamilton Borough Council last night decided on the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, to donate £250 to the fund opened by the Waikato Times for the relief of distress in London. The fund was ccAimenced last week and now stands at £570 4s 3d. The great need for relief measures in the districts which have been visited indiscriminately by the Nazi bombers cannot be too strongly stressed. Although the Londoners have met their troubles with brave hearts and a dauntless spirit, assistance from other parts of the Empire is urgently necessary. Hitler, the modern director of terror on civilian populations, said long ago that he would tight a war of nerves and that he would break the strong spirit of the British peoples. Whether he has yet done his worst in that direction we do not know, but we do know that so far he has made little headway. Failed Miserably He has certainly let loose his war of nerves, but he has failed miserably in his attempts to crush the British determination to hold and protect all that the Empire holds dear. He has rained destruction from the sky day in and day out, but the calm manner in which the people have waited for the finish of the periodic onslaughts in order that they may carry on with their daily round must leave him nonplussed. Unexpected Resistance Here he has found opposition on which he did not count when he set out on his reckless gamble for world supremacy—opposition which in the long run must prove to be his undoing. This staunch morale and unshakeable faith in the future of the British Empire, which has characterised the conduct of those in the stricken areas, will play as large a part as any other single factor in the | drive to oust the ruthless Nazi ambitions from the field of world politics I and social life. It should be recognised as the duty of every member of the British Empire to safeguard that spirit as far as possible. Gifts to relieve the distress in London have poured in from many I parts of the Empire, and by forwardi ing £IOO,OOO to the Lord Mayor of London’s fund New Zealand has shown its willingness to co-operate. The amount sent will be met by public subscription, and people in the Waikato have been given a chance to co-operate through the fund which has been opened by the Waikato Times.
