TAXI FIRMS HOAXED
FALSE TELEPHONE CALLS NEEDLESS WASTE OF PETROL At the moment when taxi firms in Hamilton, are at their wits end to perform all the duties demanded of them by the public on the allowance of petrol available to them, they have been subjected to further hardships by “fictitious” telephone calls for taxis. The calls are answered, petrol, wear-and-tear and time are wasted, and the driver discovers that he has been hoaxed. Last week-end there was a particularly virulent epidemic of false calls which resulted in much loss and annoyance. The calls were made mostly by juveniles, evidently as practical jokes. In some cases cars from two companies were called simultaneously to the same address, only to find that they were victims of a hoax. There is a method by which false calls can be traced, but the taxi firms have been reluctant to resort to extreme measures. They believe that in many cases the parents of children who make the calls are not aware of the misdemeanour and its possible consequences.
