QUIET BEEF SALE
MARKET AT FRANKTON SHORT SUPPLY OF OX SHEEP USUALLY FIRM A quiet sale was experienced for beef at the Frankton sale yesterday, but the market on the whole waa fully firm. Although fat shoep tended Just a shade cheaper over the early sales, the market improved as the sale proceeded and most sales were made on a firm basis. A large entry of fat pigs showed little change, although pork at times tended just a shade cheaper. The supply or ox was the lightest seen at the yards this season, hut this fact failed to strengthen the market tone. In some cases entries failed to reach vendors’ reserves, but rates were generally firm although In some instances slightly lower values were realised. Heavy prime descriptions were traded from £l2 10s to £l3 5s against £l3 to £l4 5s last week, ■while medium sorts were cleared from £l l is to £l2. Cow’s and heifers, which came forward In average numbers, were usually fully firm although there was variation in values. From £9 to £lO 10s was given for some extra heavy prime sorts against £lO to £ll 10s for the heaviest' last week.
Clarification Wanted At the last meeting of the Auckland executive oif the Farmers’ Union a resolution was carried requesting the Government to clarify the position in regard to the requests that have been made by employers and employees in certain industries to be allowed to work longer hours. In view of the reiterated appeals of the Government for increased production, surprise was expressed by members at the apparently hostile attitude towards such requests that . has been adopted by the Industrial Emergency Council. It was felt that the threat of an actual scarcity of essential goods made it of vital importance that no obstacle whatever should be allowed to hinder the desired increase in production. English Pig Clubs British pig club rules, which were drafted by the Small Pig-keepers’ Council, provided for four members per pig. Householders, cottagers, school children, miners, factory workers and others can join up in pig clubs. The advantages include the bulk purchase cf meal and insurance. Arrangements have been made with the Ministry of Food whereby pig clubs will obtain a fair share of meal available for pigs to supplement the waste material, and the small pig-keeper may kill and cure his pig for his own family’s consumption. Last, but by no means least, there is the recent Order-in-Council which makes it possible for any householder or allotment-holder to keep pigs without reference to local authorities, landlords or amenity agreements—provided, of course, the pigs do not cause prejudice to health and are not a nuisance.
Attractive prime cattle were quoted yesterday from £7 5s to £8 17S 6d, and rat from £•» 5s to £7 is. The entry was a plainer one, and choice cattle were conlined to comparatively few pens. Calves and boner cattle sold with little change in values. Shorn Sheep Predominate For the first time this season shorn entries predominated in the fat sheep market. Bidding was slow over the first two rows, but there was a noticeable improvement later In the sale when rates generally were fully firm. Shorn ewes sold particularly well, maiden sorts making to 29s 3d. Best woolly ewes made from 27< od to i>ss 3d. but there was Ho offering as far as woolly wethers were concerned. Although -shorn wethers were slightly cheaper at the start or the sale, competition was koen Tor good sorts later on. extra prime pons realising from 32s fid to fits fid against 3ts fid to 33-s fid last week. Hoggets sold well and In some cases prices were higher than last week.
Fat pigs were penned In the largest numbers this season, but steady competition from a large bench of buyers kept prices firm. However, In some cases, porkers appeared to be just a shade cheaper. Store pigs were again keenly sought and values wore Tor the most part firm.
