LIBRARY ALTERATIONS

PROPOSALS BEFORE COMMITTE TEXT BOOKS MUTILATED At a meeting of the Hamilton Library Committee last night, at which the chairman, Mr S. B. Sims, presided, it was reported that plans for important alterations were in hand. It was proposed to change the present reading room into the book room and vice versa. The building would be completely renovated and it was hoped to make it more attractive. The scheme was adopted and referred to the Borough Council for approval. It was regretted by the committee that the mutilation of valuable text books was still taking place in the reference room. Users of the room, it was stated, should remember that no charge was made and the least they could do was to be honest and to consider the rights of other students. It was decided to close the book room as from October 1 at 8.30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, instead of at 9 p.m., but to continue as usual on Fridays, Owing to the small attendances and the pilfering of magazines and papers the committee decided to close the reading room on Sundays, as from October 6. The number of books issued during June, July and August was 29,141, and magazines numbered 343. It was decided to increase the ! salaries of the staff by 5 per cent., retrospective to August 12.
