LOCAL AND GENERAL
Rotary’s Musical Day The weekly luncheon of the Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday, at which Mr W. H. Udy presided, took the form of a musical day. Songs were given by Mr R. Braithwaite and mandolin melodies by Mr James Ball, and several items were contributed by members. Boys as Wardens In an endeavour to stop the smashing of street lamps by boys the Sumner Borough Council, Christchurch, has decided to arrange with the school committee and headmaster of the Sumner school for the issue of red badges labelled “warden” to six senior boys chosen through the committee. The boys’ duty will be to try to prevent other boys from destroying public property. Film Causes Enthusiasm There was loud applause at the Civic Theatre last night when the officer in charge of the British soldiers who brought internees to Australia gave some advice—with true military emphasis!—to Hitler regarding the attempted invasion of England. Some of these soldiers were heroes of the evacuation of Dunkirk. Views of the New Zealand soldiers also created enthusiasm. 1940 Health Stamps The 1940 Health Stamps which will be issued on October 1 have the same design as those of last year. The lower value will be green in colour as before, but the higher value will be printed in a light red-brown tint instead of in orange as it was last year, it having been found that the design is more clearly defined in the red-brown tint. One stamp costs three half-pence and the other threepence, the former being used for penny postage and the latter for twopenny postage, and health camps will benefit by one halfpenny and one penny respectively.
Arbitration Court The Arbitration Court made further fixtures in Auckland yesterday covering the period September 30 to October 22. Several employers’ applications for exemption from the Court’s order raising award wages by 5 per cent will be heard on the first three days of next month. The Dominion fibrous plasterers and Dominion solid plasterers’ disputes were withdrawn by the unions, and among the industrial disputes remaining to be heard are those of the Northern brickworkers and local bodies’ labourers. A complete agreement was reported in the Northern cleaners, caretakers and lift attendants’ dispute.
