Ponulation of United States The population of the United States is 131.409.881, according to this year’s census. The rise in the last decade has been only 7 per cent, compared with 16.1 per cent in the previous 10 years. Schoolboy Injured Falling from a box on Saturday afternoon a schoolboy, Douglas John Cooney, of Bryce Street, received a minor knee injury which necessitated his admission to the Waikato Hospital. His condition is satisfactory. Hamilton's Lovely Gardens Overheard in the Soldiers’ Memorial Park yesterday: “What a lovely spot this is. One could spend three or four days here.” The flowers in the park are very beautiful, and the brilliant sunshine yesterday enabled visitors to see them at their best. Davlight Saving Daylight saving will come into operation again next Sunday, when j all clocks throughout New Zealand j will be put forward 30 minutes. Many Government offices in Hamilton reverted to the summer working hours this morning, commencing and finishing work 30 minutes earlier. Houses For Employees A contract has been advertised by the Ministry of Housing for the erection in Bowen Avenue, Claudelands, of two houses for employees of the Public Works Department. The erection is being supervised by the Housing Construction Department. Brewery Profits Net profit of £163,014 reported by Tooheys, Limited, brewers, Sydney, for the year ended July 31 is an increase of £10,727 and is the highest since 1928-29. Dividend is unchanged at 9 per cent and requires £155,843 on the increased capital. Payment to the staff provident fund is £SOOO, and the remainder of the profit, £2171, is added to £29,962 brought forward, to make a surplus of £32,133 carried forward. Beautiful Day One of the finest days for many weeks was enjoyed in Hamilton yesterday, the weather being warm and bright with little breeze. The Hamilton Lake grounds and the river bank attracted many visitors, a large number of whom had come from Auckland on an excursion ; train. Conditions this morning, however, were cold and hazy until a late hour. There was 5.6 degrees of frost recorded at Ruakura and 3 degrees in Hamilton. Loan For Housing The raising of a rural housing loan of £30,000 by the Waikato County Council is consented to in an Order-in-Council recorded in the Gazette. The loan from the State Advances Corporation is permitted to enable the council to make advances to farmers under the Rural Housing Act, 1939. The rate of interest is fixed at £3 per cent per annum, payable half-yearly. The first payment shall be made not later than six months after the payment of the first instalment of the loan by the corporation. National Club Evening The Hamilton National Club spent an enjoyable evening in the clubrooms on Saturday. An address on the Empire’s part in the war was given by Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P. for Tauranga, who also dealt with the period between the end of the Great War and the present time. Musical items were given by the following artists:—Songs, Messrs M. Burdis, K. McLeod, E. Day and V. H. Wing; humour, Mr D. Reid. Community singing was led by Mr H. R. Wood. New Plymouth Scholarship Three boarding scholarships at the New Plymouth High Schools for 1941 are offered. The New Plymouth Savings Bank Scholarship of £6O, tenable for five years, is open to primary school boys attending schools in Taranaki. The board of governprs is offering two scholarships of £57 each, tenable for three years at the Boys and Girls’ High Schools’ to pupils attending primary schools in the Taranaki Province, the Waikato District and certain parts of the Wanganui Education Board’s district. The examinations will be held early in November.
