TE AWAMUTU NEWS
PATRIOTIC CARD AFTERNOON A most successful bridge and five hundred card afternoon was held in the Town Hall, Te Awamutu, in aid of patriotic funds on Thursday afternoon. The stage was artistically decorated with bowls of daffodils and Iceland poppies and the afternoon tea room was gay /with vases of golden primroses and daffodils. A most delicious afternoon tea which had been generously donated by Mr E. H. Cucksey was served by ladies of the patriotic committee.
Those responsible for the afternoon included the president, Mrs Montefiore, the convener, Mrs Allan Kay> and Mesdames N. Delaney, R. Mexted (Te Kawa), Karl (Pokuru), G. Bridge, Haselden, W. Fulton, Nelson Winch and S. C. Macky. Thanks were expressed for Mrs Horan’s valuable help in the tearoom. The whnner of the progressive bridge was Mrs A. Cole, and the top score in five hundred was Mrs Martin Tims’ card. Competitions were won by Mrs 'L. G. Armstrong and Mrs R. Mexted (Te Kawa). Those noticed playing included:— Mesdames J. CONTRACT BRIDGE An interesting evening in playing the last Olympic bridge set took place at the residence of Mrs C. G. Downes on Thursday evening. The lounge was most attractively decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies and daffodils and a cheery fire gave an air of pleasant cosiness. The winners for north and south were Mesdames E. Potts and J. Self, and east and west winners were Mrs Heath and Miss D. Moir. The hostess, Mrs Downes, who wore a smart frock of floral silk and a black coatee, received the guests:— Those present were: Mesdames C. G. Downes, M. Dawson, J. Self. L. G. Armstrong, J. Roberton. H. C. Rainey, Bluck. E. Schofield, A. A. Reese. C. Zohrab, Heath, E. Potts. A. R. Kay, W. Smith, and Misses S. Empson, D. Moir, E. Scarfe, A. Hawke.
