WOMEN’S GOLF
CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY The championship play at St. Andrews on Wednesday and Thursday of this week provided, as was expected, seme good golf and some exciting matches. In the senior division on Wednesday morning Mrs Mander defeated Mrs Day by 3 up , and 2. Mrs Day has not had the advantage of regular play this year, ! and her short work has suffered in consequence. The captain, Mrs Rawlings, played a great game, particularly on the greens, to take Mrs ; McDonald to the 18th green. This was the closest game of the series in the senior division. In the semifinals the match between Mrs Mander and Mrs Seyb gave the gallery a great thrill, the putting by Mrs Mander being of an exceptionally high standard. The finals were played in good weather with a sharp breeze. After the first 18 holes during which fortunes varied, Mrs Mander came in to lunch 2 up. In the afternoon, playing the steadier golf, Mrs McDonald squared the game on the 10th green. Mrs Mander from this stage could not produce her usual accuracy on the greens and Mrs McDonald gradually drew ahead to win 3 up and 2. The Junior Division In the junior division three games proved very close. In the morning Miss Cann won from Mrs Berry after a hard struggle on the 19th green. Mrs Melvin in the morning beat Mrs Thomas after a great match by a putt on the 18th green, and in the afternoon was taken by Mrs Tanner to the 20th before she gained the necessary lead. In the finals Mrs Hardy’s steadiness proved too much for Mrs Melvin, who was 4 down after the 13th. However, Mrs Melvin provided the gallery with a thrill by sinking a long putt on the 16th green. In the Gillies Vase division Mrs Beattie had the two hardest matches on Wednesday. In the morning she defeated Mrs Morrison on the 18th and in the afternoon Mrs C. L. MacDiarmid took her also to the last green. The final between Mrs Sole and Mrs Beattie proved a great game with never more than one hole between the two players. Mrs Sole eventually won on the last green. Stableford Bogey Competition On Wednesday the Stableford bogey competition played by the “rest” resulted in a tie in the seniors between Miss K. Wilson and Mrs Waring, both scoring 28 points. Miss Wilson won on the count back. Mrs Gamble won the junior trophy with 29 points. Last Saturday the week-end players played a qualifying round for their match play competition. The first to qualify was Miss Flavin who played 1 under her handicap. Miss M. McClean was second with a nett 76. A raffle in aid of the fund for sufferers from the air raids in London has been launched by the golf clubs in the Waikato. Three prizes, a refrigerator, an electric washing machine, and a radio, have been generously donated by Mr E. Runnerstrum. of Hamilton. All golfers are asked to give every aid in their power to make this project a great success, and help along a most worthy cause.
