BALLOONS ADRIFT

DAMAGE OVER SWEDEN POWER SUPPLY AFFECTED (United Tress Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 19, 2.0 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 18 The London Times’ Stockholm correspondent says that dozens of British barrage balloons drifted over southern and western Sweden yesterday, the trailing steel cables damaging the electricity supply and other communications. The balloons have drifted 300 miles, and Swedish planes, antiaircraft guns and Home Guard have attempted to bring down the balloons being occasionally successful. The electric train service in western Sweden was interrupted by the balloons and trams in Gothenburg were halted. Several southern Swedish communities were “blacked out.” About 40 balloons were reported over Denmark, where much damage to power lines is reported. The whole of south Jutland has been cut off. One balloon has been seen over Helsinki. It is officially stated in Berlin that German pursuit planes have brought down 920 British balloons adrift over the continent.
