ONEKAKA PROJECT

PRODUCTION UNLIKELY PIG IRON MAY BE IMPORTED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday The re-opening of the existing works at Onekaka for the production of pig iron is not considered likely. When the shortage of pig iron was acute, the possibility of placing the Onekaka works into production was considered. The latest report is that the Government believes that the market for pig iron could be met best by importing sufficient from Australia to build up a stock of 1000 tons. To re-open the Onekaka mill an expenditure of £12,000 would be necessary, it is reported. That amount represents the value of the importation of 2000 tons of pig iron.
