POINT-TO-POINT RACES

GOOD DAY AT FENCOURT OPEN TO BRITISH LASS (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Sunday Excellent cross-country racing was witnessed at the annual point-to-point meeting of the Waikato Hunt on the property of Mr A. J. Sxvayne, at Fencouri, on Saturday. The course was in good order, and With interesting fields in most of the events, the large gathering ot spectators was eniertalned to a line day’s sport In ideal weather. The best of the hunters in their class were seen in action and apart from Waikato entries there were a number of horses from Pakuranga and other nearby hum clubs. The main event was won by Mr R. If. Townsend’s British Lass, who showed form likelv to take her to further success. H uka King! went surprisingly well for second and the Auckland entry, Cuurnic, was finishing on In third place. Jarko, owned by Miss Carlie Scott, or Putaruru, repeated his performance of last year by winning the ladies’ race for maiden hunters and also the Members' Lightweight. Mr N'ed Brown rode Eureka to victory In the Members’ Heavyweight, and High Star gave. Miss K. Rnnstead an easy victory In the Ladies’ Open SteepleTo conclude the day, the master, Mr Wynn- Brown, presented the trophies to the winners. lip said it was pleasing that the day had been so successful, as it was held mainly to entertain the farmers ot the Waikato who allowed the meets to be held over their properties during the season. The hunt was fortunate that there were so many good sportsmen among the Farmers, said Mr Rrown. The point-to-point concluded an eventful season, added the master. The hunt had adopted the true British attitude of carrying on as normally as possible, with the result that an excellent season had been experienced. The master thanked Mr Swayne for throwing open his ideal farm lands for the fixture. A happy Incident occurred when Mr J. F. Louden, of Hamilton, presented the master with an album or photographs taken at meets of the hunt in recent years. The Results Ladles Open steeplechase, about 1$ miles.—High Star. Miss K. Ranstead’s (owner), 1; Sandy Dix, Miss M. McKinnon’s (owner), 2. Also started: . Record Flight. High Star led all the way and won at a fmt after Record Flight had dislodged his rider, and Sandy Dix had baulked at several Tenees. Time, 5.36. Members* Heavy-weight Race, about 2* miles.—Eureka. Mr Wynn Brown’s (Mr N. Rrown). 1; Froyberg. Mr N. Henry’s (owner), 2; Mascot. Mr C. H. Haxvkes’ (owner), 3. Also started; Peggy Malone. Condition stood to Eureka and he was able to hold the lead all the. way. After the first fence had been jumped Eureka led rrom Mascot. Freyberg and Peggy Malone. Freyberg moved Into second place along the back and he and Eureka drew clear or the other two. At one stage Freyberg was up on terms with Eureka, but iii the final run home, the latter went on m win by two lengths, with Mascot some distance away third. Time, 5.19. Ladies’ Race (maiden hunters), about 1* miles.—Jacko, Miss C. Scott’s (owner), 1; Black Magic, Miss B. Farrer’s (Miss N. Ranstead), 2. The only starters. Jacko defeated his opponent very easily, being assisted by good Jumping. Black Magic seemed very difficult to hnndlp, and covered a good deal or extra ground. Time, 5.28. Open Steeplechase, about 2* miles.— British Lass, Mr R. 11. Townsend’s (Mr G. Howlett), 1; Huka Klngi, Mr N. Brown's (owner), 2; Connie, Mr J. C. Fletcher’s (Mr C. B. Bowling), 3. Also started: Absent. Hot Dance, Record Flight, Sandy Dix, Te Puroa. ATter waiting on the pace-makers, British Lass, x\ - ho was very well handled, finished strongly to defeat Huka Klngi by several lengths. The latter led out from Absent. Sandy Dix, Te Puroa and British Lass and with less than a mile covered these five drew clear and staged a great contest for the remainder of the journey. Huka Klngi still led aTter a round, being followed closely by Te Puroa, Absent. British Lass and Sanely Dix. Te Puroa went ahead to make the pace from Absent, Huka Klngi and British Lass, xvlio was fairly well back. Absent appeared dangerous until he hit a Tenee hard, and as they turned for home, British Lass commenced a run which look her to the front before the last fence was jumped. She went on to win nicely from Huka King! who stayed on xveii. Caurnie. who had not appeared in the picture until the last few furlongs, was finishing fast to get third from Te Puroa. who tired arter going a good race. Time. 5.17. Members’ Light-weight Race, about 2* miles.—Jacko. Miss C. Scott’s (Mr p. Priest). 1; Dictum, Mr Wynn Brown’s (Mr N. Brown). 2; Mascot, Mr C. IT. Haxvkes’ (owner), 3. Also started: Archco, Jill, Suburb. Suburb set a fast pare and led earlv rrom Dictum, Mascot. Jacko and Jill. Dictum then went to the front, but Suburb was clear again aTter they had completed a round. Jacko had no dlffipultv in drawing away when asked for an effort, and he increased his lead to win easily front Dictum, with Mascot a Mir third and Suburb rourth. The time, 5.13, x\as the fastest, of the day.
