LADIES’ NIGHT

HAMILTON ORPHANS’ CLUB HAPPY EVENING SPENT Ladies’ Night at the Hamilton Orphans’ Club again proved its popularity on Saturday, when there was a very large attendance to enjoy the final function of this nature, held by the club during its 1940 season. The tables were gay with bowls of flowering currant, spring flowers and Iceland poppies, and the usual spirit of happy goodfellowship was abroad among the members and their friends, to the enjoyment of all.

Before the commencement of the programme, the Guardian, Mr Harold Baker, expressed the gratification felt by all at the escape of the King and Queen in the recent raid on Buckingham Palace, and the National Anthem was enthusiastically honoured.

The president, Mr A. W. Grant, was in the chair, and during the evening spoke on the national courage being displayed during these hazardous times. The following excellent programme was thoroughly enjoyed: Songs, Miss Alma Burton, and Messrs M. Burdis, K. McLeod and P. Herlihy; Maori songs in character, Mr H. Wood; elocutionary items, Mrs Zelda Fahey; magic, Mr H. Chandler; humourous items, Mr Rex Yates (Auckland); items by the orchestra including a special presentation of “There’ll Always be an England,” under the conductorship of Mr W. A. King; community singing led by Mr E. H. Quill. The accompaniments were played by Messrs Stanley Jackson and W. Harrison.

Mrs Harold Baker was wearing a gown of Manila beige lace, and Mrs A. W. Grant was in a frock of black crepe soie and a black velvet coatee. Those present were: Mesdames F. Course, K. P. Eade, E. V.
