READING FOR TROOPS

FURTHER PUBLIC APPEAL BOOKS AND PERIODICALS (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday A co-operative effort between the Country Library Service of the New Zealand Libraries’ Association and the National Patriotic Board, with the backing of the general public, has resulted in splendid provision being made in the way of reading matter for troops under training and when they go overseas. A generous response was made to the appeal some time ago for books and periodicals, but since then these supplies have been* drawn on heavily and another appeal is being made for suitable literature, not trash and rejects. Mr G. T. Alley, who is in charge of the Country Library Service, says that quite 25.000 books and an equal number of periodicals have gone overseas on troopships. In addition, libraries at the three main training camps have been supplied, as well as the Air Force training schools and coast watching stations. The big training centre being established at Waiouru will require about 5000 books. A good rule in regard to books is to give books that the giver would be glad to receive himself. Gifts may be left at all public libraries, and in the case of big parcels being available the Country Library Service would arrange the forwarding to the War Library Service, Wellington.
