SOFT DRINK PRICES

POSITION IN THE WAIKATO COMMENT BY TRIBUNAL (Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday Commenting to-day on the price of soft drinks charged by retailers to the public, the Price Tribunal stated that it took a very serious view of the action of some Waikato traders who had taken advantage of the recent slight increase in cost, through the operation of sales tax at the new rate of 10 per cent. :n lieu of the old rate of 5 per cent., by increasing the consumer price by as much as o penny a bottle. In pointing out that such was an exploitation of the public, the tribunal stated that in no instance should the price be increased by more than £d which, in the case of Waikato retail traders, would make the new consumer price for the standard lOoz. size, 4£d a bottle. It was with regret, the tribunal added, that owing to some of the retailers refusing to give heed to the personal representations made by an inspecting officer by promptly reducing the price to a sum not exceeding 4id a bottle, it has been compelled to resort to its clearly defined powers under the Price Regulations by considering the instituting of legal proceedings against the offending traders.
