THRILLING DOG-FIGHT
MORE RAIDERS OVER LONDON SEVERAL CASUALTIES—BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED MACHINE-GUN FIRE HEARD IN CROWDED STREETS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 11, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 10 Sirens sounded in London five times today, from 1.7 p.m. to 8.17 p.m. The first four warnings were of short duration. The fifth is continuing. Immediately after the first alarm there was a thrilling dog-fight over London between enemy planes and British fighters. The exchange of machine-gun fire was heard in the crowded streets. Twenty-two houses were demolished, with casualties, in two adjoining streets in the South-east London area. A number of people were killed when a bomb fell at the corner of two streets in Central London, sending seven houses crashing to the ground. Fifteen hours after a house in South-east London had been demolished by a bomb rescuers were still working to release a family of five emtombed under the debris. A stretcher party was killed while on duty in Southwest London. A fire which threatened Bow Church w T as one of the biggest. Hundreds of firemen worked feverishly in the narrow side streets and saved the church. Many people in the East London district have been without gas since the night of September 7. Some localities are temporarily without gas and water. A communal feeding system has been instituted in the East End and is working effectively. Lord Woolton has urged traders to get their stocks from the docks as speedily as possible. Retailers are warned to shelter stocks. Splinters of glass have pierced even canned foods. A raider dropped a salvo of bombs on a residential area at a south-east seaside town at noon today. Two women were killed and several people injured.
