Nearly Swallowed a Pearl While eating oysters in a restaurant in Pahiatua recently, a customer was amazed to discover that he had nearly swallowed a perfectly formed pearl. No Food Rationing Rationing of foodstuffs in New Zealand is not contemplated yet, acj cording to a letter from the Minister j ot Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to the Canterbury District Pig Council, which had advocated such a step. “I appreciate the sentiments underlying the resolution, but at the present time rationing of foodstuffs in New Zealand is not contemplated,” the Minister said. Vandals at Showgrounds Wanton destruction at the Taranaki agricultural showgrounds at New Plymouth will entail considerable expense in repairs. Nearly every window pane on the ring side of the grandstand and on the side facing the road have been deliberately broken by rocks and stones, and there is also evidence of damage by pearifles. More than 40 panes of glass have been broken and some of the woodwork of the window sashes has been smashed Rocks and stones have been found in the dining room under the stand, and it is stated that some of them are of a size as to indicate that the damage was not done by children.
