WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TAUPIRI BRANCH The Taupiri Women’s Institute held its August meeting in the Taupiri Hall, recently, when a fair number of members were present. The president, Mrs T. McDowall presided. Mrs D. Welch was congratulated on the success of her daughter Betty, who is studying dramatic art in Australia. During the afternoon Mrs Foley j gave an interesting demonstration on j curing skins, and also an enjoyable talk on her stay in Ireland. Mrs Black read two short plays by A. A. Milne. The flower competition was won by Mrs Fransham (seniors), Mrs Walters (juniors). Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Sowerby. Bellingham, Farrell, McPherson, Lovell,’ S. Grant, Welch. WAITERIMU —MATAHIJRA

Mrs C. Storey presided over a very good attendance at the usual monthly meeting of the WaiterimuMatahura Women’s Institute. Mrs McGaughran, president of the Northern Waikato Federation, was present, and gave a detailed and very interesting report on the Dominion Council meeting which she attended recently in Wellington. Competition for a sponge roll was won by Mrs J. Grundy, with Mrs Lawry resulted. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs Aldridge’s white iris, 1; Mrs Lawry’s bi-colour trumpet daffodil, 2. An amusing competition—“ Complete the Limerick”—was won by Mrs Aldridge and Mrs Grundy. Misses M. Fulton and M. Brash i were hostesses for the day. WHAT A WHAT A The August meeting of the Whatawhata Women's Institute was held in the local hall, recently, when Mrs Guthrie presided over a good attendance of members. It was decided to form a lin<w with an overseas Women’s Institute and Mrs Guthrie agreed to be the correspondent. A demonstration given by Mrs Pascoe on the making of a shoulder spray and a Victorian posy was much enjoyed by the members. The roll call “Sayings of Mother,” revived memories and many amusing sayings were forthcoming. An old photograph competition was won by Mrs L. Wilcock and the bloom competition was won by Mrs Gilder, with Mrs Wills s.econd and Mrs Swanner third. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess©*.

NAWTON—ROTOKAURI The September meeting of the Nawton—Rotokauri Women’s Institute took place recently and was well attended. This being members’ day the chair was occupied by Mrs Sanders, while Mrs Kay acted as secretary. Mesdames Wadham and White (junr.) were appointed delegates to a meeting to arrange group activities. Invitations were accepted to the Whitiora birthday party and a social afternoon at the Te Kowhai Institute. Mesdames Waters and Terry were appointed to make arrangements for despatching Christmas parcels for overseas soldiers. A number of members volunteered to visit the infirmary at the Waikato Hospital on September 11. These ladies will take afternoon tea | for the inmates and a number of artists to entertain them. During the afternoon Mrs Frost ( gave a talk on the life of Mrs Elizabeth Chandler, the New Zealand writer of song and verse, after which Mrs Elvey sang “Love Waves,” the words of which were written by this talented woman.

After the hostesses had served afternoon tea the winners of the monthly competitions were announced, these being as follows: — Knitted bootees, Mrs Sanders 1, Mrs Elvey 2; shortbread, Mrs Sanders 1, Mrs Elvey 2. Mrs Harris was successful in winning a Shakespearian competition. A most interesting demonstration of beaten brass work was given by Mrs Sanders, members showing their appreciation by according her a hearty vote of thanks. Last month Institute members set apart a special day for the planting of shrubs. This resulted in a number of beautiful specimens being planted in the grounds of Nawton Hall. NGARUAWAHIA The August meeting of the Ngaruawahia Women’s Institute was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Hall, Mrs Loughnan presiding. Two new members were enrolled. The toilet set donated by Miss Good was won by Mrs O. J. Mcßurney. Several articles were donated to the Lady i Galway appeal. The competition for September is to be a vase of flowers. The president, gave a short account of the school for officers held at Huntly. MAIJNGATAUTARI The monthly meeting of the Maungatautari Women’s Institute was field at the residence of Mrs T. Hill, when a fair attendance was recorded, j An account of the planting, by l the group, of trees in the main street I of Cambridge was given. Nominaj lions for district council members j were asked for. i The meeting welcomed Mrs J. W. I Chapman, president of the South I Auckland Federation, who gave a I very interesting talk on current matters in the institute, and a description of the council meeting in Well lington, which was held instead of

the usual annual conference. The president presented her with a beautiful bouquet. At the conclusion of the meeting members took home various garments to be repaired foi the refugees. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames F. Hicks and O’Neill.
