SLOW BEEF SALE
MARKET AT FRANKTON LIGHTER ENTRY FORWARD STEADY DEMAND FOR SHEEP Although entries were the lightest for several weeks, no improvement for beef was recorded at the Frankton sale yesterday. Ox beef, in fact, was a shade easier, and late rates were maintained for cow and heifer beef only with difficulty in Gome cases. A fuller entry of fat sheep showed little variation in rates from last week’s sales, while the market for a larger penning of fat pigs was very firm. Bidding commenced quite brightly for ox beef, but competition weakened as the sale progressed and for the bulk of the sale slightly lower values were recorded. A few heavy prime bullocks were traded from £l2 10s to £l3 15s, in comparison with £l3 5s to £l4 10s last week. Medium sorts changed hands from £ll 6s to £l2 ss, with lighter descriptions being knocked down from £9 15s to £ll. Quality was only average. Quality in the cow and heifer beef section was the plainest seen for some weeks, and the lightness of the entry was in contrast to the heavy offerings of previous weeks. Competition could be described as steady, but there was no enthusiasm at any stage. Late rates for the most part were repeated, but there were instances when prices appeared just
a shade lower. Some extra heavy sorts were quoted from £9 10s to £ll 3s. heavy prime from £8 to £9 ss, and light prime from £6 to £7 10s. Calves sold steadily, while the market for boner cattle showed a slight improvement, if anything. Sheep Values Steady The fuller penning of fat sheep included more shorn sorts and for these competition was firm, buyers paying from 25s 3d to 31s 3d for shorn wethers. There was little difference in market rates on the whole, although a dull period was experienced towards the closing stages of the sale when entries appeared to be selling more cheaply. As was the case last week, there were no particularly heavy choice sheep on offer, but there was a fair number of good average sorts. From 32s to 37s was given for the best of the wethers, this comparing with 31s 6d to 36s 6d last week. Top prices for ew r es were not
quite on a par with those of last week, but values on the whole were much the same. The best were quoted from 26s 6d to 27s 6d in comparison with 27s to 30s 9d last week, A lighter entry of hoggets sold firmly. A bigger entry of fat pigs did not dampen competition, which appeared keener at very firm values. Baconers were again quoted from 70s to 90s, and porkers from 54s to 68s. Although they were still dear, store pigs appeared just a shade easier than last week. Price Summary The following table is a summary of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards at the last two sales: BEEF (per 1001 b..) This Week Last Week
