ONLY FOUR TYPES

RESTRICTIONS ON BREAD NEW ENGLISH MEASURE Housewives in Britain will have only four types of loaves of ordinary bread to choose from after August 26—tin, ovenbottom, sandwich, and what is known in Scotland as a batch loaf, states a correspondent, writing on August 15. An order to this effect has been issued. At present there are 45 different types of loaf in England. The four now allowed must be sold in weights of lib, or an even number of pounds, except in Scotland, where a tin loaf of lib I2oz will be permitted. Bread has been a subject of debate ever since the Government’s decision to fortify “new white” by the addition of vitamin B and calcium. Medical men, writing in the “Lancet,” have questioned the wisdom q£ this step. Expert’s Advice At Lord Woolton’s invitation, Professor J. C. Drummond replied to criticisms and said that the decision had been taken on the advice of the Scientific Food Policy Committee, recently set up by the Government. The committee had based its recommendation on a general consensus of opinion among the leading exports on nutrition, reinforced by experiments designed to assure that the recommendation was practical from the standpoint of the milling and baking industries, and desirable in the interests of the national health. The experiments were still in progress, and it was not yet definitely decided what particular form, or amount, of calcium would be added. The synthetic vitamin B 1 was absolutely identical with the product of the natural wheat berry.
