MAGAZINES NEEDED
MEN IN MILITARY CAMPS BRIGHTEN ENFORCED LEISURE An urgent appeal has been made for magazines for men in the Te Rapa and Claudelands military camps, where the need for reading matter has been keenly felt. With the men isolated on account of the measles outbreak at Te Rapa, time begins to hang heavily on their hands when there are few diversions to lighten the monotony of an enforced rest. Already a large number of .magazines from the Hamilton and Frankton public libraries has been taken to Te Rapa, but many more are required to meet, the demand. When placed on the sick list the men prefer magazines to a long book, and so far the demand for short stories and articles has considerably exceeded the supply. In order to facilitate the collection of the books, Mr F. Findlay has stated that if any intending donors stop his bakery vans on their rounds the magazines will be taken by the drivers and forwarded to the camps. Magazines may also be left at his firm’s bakehouse in Collingwood Street, at Caro’s Great Bargain Stores, and at E. C Day, Limited’s, auction rooms.
The work already done by the Hamilton patriotic organisations to brighten life in the isolation camp has won the appreciation of officers in charge of the 600 men at the Te Rapa racecourse. Owing to the outbreak of measles all leave has been stopped and no one is allowed to go in or out of the camp. Practically all business is done by telephone. In addition to the supply of books and other reading matter that has been sent to the camp, arrangements have been made to send a piano and tables for games. Other amenities to help the men pass their leisure agreeably are also being provided.
