CONSCRIPTION PLANS
LEGISLATION IN AMERICA AMENDMENTS BY HOUSE (United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 The House of Representatives passed the Conscription Bill by 263 votes to 149. The Bill now returns to the Senate, owing to changes the House made, the foremost of which are:— Firstly, an increase in the draft age limit from 21 to 45, whereas the Senate’s was 21 to 31; secondly, the provision requiring a 60-day interval before invoking the draft; thirdly, different methods of compelling industry to co-operate in the defence programme, although both Chambers would empower the Government to control and operate plants whose owners are recalcitrant.
President Roosevelt has signed the Defence Bill of 500,000,000 dollars.
