WOMEN’S GOLF
CLACHAN ROSE BOWL FINALS An L.G.U. medal competition was held on the St. Andrews links last Wednesday. Although a shower made the going rather heavy for some of the early starters, conditions improved later and some voiy good cards were returned. In the senior division two players played to an 80 gross, Mrs Seyb and Mrs Mander, while Mrs McDonald turned in another good card of 81 gross. With the senior players in such good form, the championships which start next week should provide some golf of first class standard. The winner of the medal trophy was Mrs Bindon, whose card was 87 —16 —71. This further reduces Mrs Bindon’s handicap to 15, and we tender her our congratulations as this is her first season after a three years’ rest. The next in order in nett scores were Mrs Seyb, 80—7—73; Mrs S. Bennett, 86—13—73; Mrs Mander, 80—4—76; and Mrs McDonald, 81— 4—77. The juniors also played some very good golf, and two substantial reductions were returned. Mrs Simons, playing very steadily, returned a card of 93 to bring her handicap down three points and win the trophy. Closely following her Mrs Davey, who carded a 98—28 —7O, also dropped two points from her handicap. Then came Mrs Signal and Miss Wright, who played light to their handicaps, and Miss Cann, who played just one stroke over hers, with a card of 97—24—73. Competition for Patriotic Funds Hidden number competition, the proceeds of which went to the Patriotic Fund, was won by Mrs McCullagh and Mrs Gower. On Thursday the final of the Clachan Rose Bowl was played in good weather, between Mrs Seyb and Mrs S. Bennett. Mrs Bennett was not quite so accurate as usual. Mrs Seyb drew ahead until she was four up on her opponent after the 11th hole. From there, however, Mrs Bennett struck form and, winning every hole coming in except the 15th, she squared the match on the 16th green and finished the winner by 2 ud. In the Horton Cup the quarterfinals are between Mrs Beattie and Mrs Worley, Mrs Signal and Mrs Mander, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Bindon, while in the other match, Mrs Thomas beat Mrs Seyb 3 up and 1. In the consolation competition the quarter-finals are between Mrs Morrison and Mrs Qualtrough, Mrs Toombs and Mrs Hilton, Miss P. Wilson and Mrs Macdiarmid, and Mrs Taylor and Mrs McDonald. Players are asked to complete these matchc/s within the next fortnight.
Next Wednesday the qualifying rounds of the championships will be played in the morning, and the first roimd of match play in the afternoon. As this is a big programme for one day, members are asked to be on the first tee promptly to their advertised time. We are pleased to note a very good reduction by a junior member during the last week. Mrs Heather has reduced her handicap by eight strokes in one day and is now eligible to play in the junior championship class.
