WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TE HOE Mrs Thompson presided over a good attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute which was held in the local hall. A number of soldiers’ hussifs were distributed among the members to be filled. Much useful information was gained during the roll call Of “Gardening Hints.” Competition results were as follows: Women’s Institute competition, Mrs May 1, Mrs Paton 2; best bloom, Mrs Carter 1, Miss Le Heron 2; hostesses’ competition, Mrs Black, Mrs Twining and Miss Laing (equal). An interesting demonstration on decorating jellies was given by Mrs May, including the making of birds and animals from tinned and fresh fruit. During the social hour visitors from Taupiri were welcomed and the president extended greetings to members who celebrate their birthdays this month. Songs given by Mrs Black were much appreciated and two recitations were given by Miss Le Heron, the musical accompaniment being rendered by Miss Thompson. Hostesses were Mesdames Jones and Le Heron and Miss Le Heron. HILLCREST The September meeting of the Hillcrest Women's Institute was held in Nixon Street Hall, recently, the president, Mrs Morley, presiding over a good attendance. The motto was “The world is full of willing people, those that are willing, and those who will let them.” An invitation to all members to attend the Whitiora birthday, which is to be held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on September 25, was received. Five parcels are to be sent this month to the soldiers, and a donation will be made towards the New Zealand Women’s fighter fund. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to our late members, Mrs Martin, Mrs Keats, Mrs Hodgkinson and Miss J. Fowle. Mrs J. Ward Chapman, president of the Waikato Federation, gave an interesting resume of the Dominion Council meeting held in Wellington recently. The competition awards were as follows:—Six daffodils, Mrs Cox 1, Mrs Hildreth 2; soldier’s handkerchief made from a flour bag, Mrs Gordon 1, Mrs Campbell 2. The handkerchiefs are to be handed in to the Patriotic Society. A large parcel was made up for the Lady Galway Guild to be sent down to headquarters in Wellington.
