FINN CREATES PROBLEM
CHARGED AS DESERTER (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Thursday A Finnish seaman, Ture Ahlgren, aged 38, who appeared before Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court, charged with deserting from a foreign ship on August 27 and also with unlawfully entering New Zealand without a permit, was unable to speak English and his ship was at Suva loading for Mexico. Through an interpreter accused denied deserting from his ship, saying he had been drunk and missed it by accident. He added that he was anxious to rejoin the vessel, and did not want to stay in the country. The vice-Consul for Finland, Mr C. Tudehope, suggested that accused might be sent to a port on the American coast where his ship would call. An application had been previously made to send a Finn to his own land, but the Department of Internal Affairs had said only two routes were available—one by way of the Mediterranean and Italy, and the other by way of Vladivostok. Neither was very practicable, he added. The magistrate adjourned the case until tomorrow morning, in order that inquiries could be made concerning the future of accused.
