PLUNKET APPEAL
FLOWER DAY COLLECTION Today is flower day in Hamilton. From early this morning business people and shoppers were seen ornamented with sprays of flowers in their buttonholes. These favours were to help the Hamilton Plunket Society, which is holding its annual street appeal. At an early hour a band of willing helpers, ex-pupils of the Waikato Girls’ Diocesan School, was stationed at strategic points in Victoria Street with trays of flowers. There were sprays of pansies, freezias, violets and all the other flowers that are the glory of spring, tastefully decorated with pieces of asparagus fern and ornamental grasses. “Have a flower, sir,” was an invitation frequently heard, and the majority of those stopped responded willingly to the appeal. Later many a shop or office was made gay and colourful with bunches bought from the invading flower girls. As well as the flowers there is a produce stall in front of the Public Library, where fruit and vegetables are displayed for sale. A similar stall controlled by the Frankton subbranch is held in Commerce Street. The response of the public indicated its appreciation of the Plunket Society’s commendable service to the community.
