FIGHTER PLANES FUND I £255 IN FIRST WEEK (Special to Times) MATAMATA, Wednesday A subscription list sponsored by the Matamata branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, for the raising of funds towards supplying aeroplanes to the R.A.F. has resulted in the sum of £255 8s 6d being J subscribed in the first week of the appeal. A penny trail in the town brought in over £22, and other sub- > scriptions include: Mr and Mrs R. C. Morgan, Mr and Mrs W. McNab, 1 Mr and Mrs J. E. West, and D. i Brazendale, each 10 guineas; W. 1 Emslie, Mr and Mrs J. R. Roberts ' £10; G. T. Newsome, Mr and Mrs A. t B. Jackson, 5 guineas; Matamata Old Pupils, J. F. Vosper, £5.

; CITIZENS’ BAND ACTIVITIES ! ' The report presented at the annual general meeting of the Matamata Citizens’ Band stated that 29 public appearances had been made by the band during the year. The mera- , bership numbered 24. | During the year, the band had

been fitted with uniforms, the money, with the exception of a £25 grant from the Borough Council, being found by the band. The financial position was reported to be sound, with a credit balance of £ll and assets valued at £373 13s 3d, with liabilities nil. Officers elected were:—Patron, the Mayor, Mr W. A. Gordon; president. Mr S. Ellery; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Pohlen, J. E. Barlow and R. J. Bennett; conductor, Mr Wilbert Marks; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. G. Brown; deputy-conductor, Mr E. Bygrave; sergeant, Mr A. Andrew; corporal, Mr M. Ellery; drum-major. Mr E. Malligan; custodian, Mr S. Collins.

ROAD RACING 100-MILE CYCLE EVENT Over 50 entries have been received by the Matamata Cycling Club for its annual 100-mile road race, to be held on Saturday. The course Is from Papakura to Matamata, commencing at 10 a.m. Entries include 10 from the Mata- : mata Club, the remainder being ' divided between Manukau, Northern, Lyndale, Papatoetoe, Papakura, Tauranga, Te Kuiti and Morrinsville l clubs.
