CIVIL DEFENCE SERVICES DANGERS FACED BRAVELY BOMBS AND MACHINE-GUNS (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 5, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 4 “In the last two months men and women of the civil defence services have been called into action on an ever-increasing scale,” states the Ministry of Home Security. “Never have they been found wanting. “Often bombed and even machine-gunned as they worked to succour their fellow citizen*, they have demonstrated their courage and efficiency in a manner which has been largely responsible for the calmness and confidence with which the people of this country are now able to meet the attacks which the enemy is delivering on an increasing scale. “Just as the spirit and courage of this country remains intact, so does its industrial equipment.” The Ministry expresses confidence in the capacity of the civil defence organisation to deal with future attacks from the enemy, which it fully appreciated may be on a larger and more intense scale.
