PURCHASE OF FRUIT

GOVERNMENT ASSURANCE . GROWERS NOT SATISFIED .. (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday An assurance that the Government was prepared to purchase next season’s fruit crop in the same way as in the past year was given at the annual conference of the Fruit Growers’ Federation by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash in his opening address. He said he could not discuss the prices until the results of last season’s trading was known but if the growers would meet him in the same spirit as he would them, he was sure they could reach an agreement. If the fruit could be exported there would be an economic return but under 600,000 cases of last season’s crop were exported.

The annual report presented to the conference dealt with the activities of the federation. It stated that after taking the widest and fairest view possible, and remembering the Empire was at war, the directors had to admit that the price paid by the Government was inadequate to cover the cost of production and give an average working orchardist a living wage.
