TAHITI CHOOSES BIG VOTE FOR DE GAULLE FRENCH OCEANIA REVOLT (By Telegraph.— Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, stated tonight that he had received word from Papeete that, as a result of a plebiscite held in Tahiti, Moorea and the Paumotu Achipelago, 5564 votes have been cast in favour of General de Gaulle, as against 18 for the Petain Government. It is also reported that the Governor of French Oceania has been deposed, and the administration has been assumed by a provisional Government composed of three members of the Privy Council, who are awaiting the nomination of a new Governor by General de Gaulle.
Mr Fraser said he had sent a telegram to Tahiti expressing on behalf of the New Zealand Government great satisfaction at the support which French Oceania was now according to the cause of free France under General de Gaulle’s leadership, and pleasure at this further evidence of renewed solidarity of Frenchmen throughout the world with the peoples of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 3 A message from San Juan, Puerto Rico, says the citizens of Martinique are reported to be planning a plebiscite to determine whether to remain loyal to the Vichy Government or to join General de Gaulle.
