Raider In Tasman
ANOTHER VICTIM FEARED FRENCH STEAMER MISSING 35 PEOPLE ON BOARD (United Press Assn.—Elec. TeU Copyright) (Received Sept. 4, 3.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 4 It is feared that the French steamer Notou, of 2489 tons, has fallen victim to the enemy raider which later shelled the Turakina in the Tasman on August 20. Now more than 16 days overdue on her voyage from Newcastle to Noumea, the Notou carried six European officers, a crew of 28 natives, and one passenger, M. Paul Vois, director of the nickel mines in New Caledonia, who was returning after important trade discussions with the Commonwealth Government. The Minister of the Navy announced that it has been reported from Noumea that the Notou is considerably overdue. The Notou sailed from New South Wales on August 12 and as it was known that the Turakina was attacked by the raider on August 20 it seems probable that the Notou was also one of the raider’s victims.
