CLASHES IN RUMANIA NAZIS’ STIFF NOTE (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 3 Authoritative quarters in Bucharest say that definite military plans are being made for resistance to the Hungarian occupation of Transylvania. General Dargolina and General Corniciu declared that their men will resist the Hungarians. Thousands of peasants, armed with pickaxes and spades, are taking up the positions of troops who retire. Many officers and soldiers in Transylvania have decided to remain at their posts and aid the peasants in their resistance. The leader of the Peasant Party, Dr. Juliu Maniu, has been appointed president of a committee of resistance. Rumanian troops are reported from Cluj to have regained control of Oradea after driving Hungarian Fifth Columnists from the telephone building with bayonets. Germany has sent a stiff Note to Rumania demanding an explanation of attacks on Germans and the Government’s failure to maintain order. Two German motorised units are reported to have reached Sighet, on the border of Rumania, adjoining Ruthenia. The Rumanian Minister for the Interior has prohibited public demonstrations, and numerous arrests have been made. An official message from Bucharest says 231 “alarmists” have been sent to concentration camps, many of the leaders including Iron Guard members. A former Cabinet Minister is under house arrest.
