WAIPA RACING CLUB
PAST YEAR REVIEWED PROFIT OF £9BO SHOWN (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Monday There was a satisfactory attendance at the annual general meeting of the Waipa Racing Club when the president, Mr J. T. Young, was in the chair. The annual report referred to the present war and stated that so far the club had been able to carry on in common with others and would do so as long as it was considered expedient. Both meetings had been held 'this year on the club’s own course and though income had fallen, a net profit of £989 JBs 9d was shown after writing off for depreciation the sum of £347 10s, bad debts £26 10s and carrying out maintenance to the extent of £515 11s 9d. Improvements had been completed at the additional cost of £751 17s Bd. The sum of £922 4s 8d was being carried forward and the club would have to watch the position very carefully till the war was over. The chairman said that he felt that the club should carry on its activities in spite of the war. Membership had increased from 237 at the beginning of 1936 to 451, the increase being evidence of the popularity of the club. Improvements Completed Improvements had been completed though most of the work had been done in the preceding year. Good value had been obtained. A distinct improvement was the alteration at the one and a-quarter mile starting post, and, in this, Mr W. H. Parish had generously co-operated with the club in exchanging the necessary land. He commended the Light Horse Association and said the club had shown its appreciation of the activities of the association by lending the course for the patriotic picnic meeting which is to be held on Saturday. Mr Young paid tribute to the donors of trophies, the staff, and to all who had assisted the club and racing generally. It had been found impracticable to give effect to the recommendation that provision be made to increase the number of committee members representing non-debenture holders. He explained the requirements of procedure necessary for the purpose. The club had gone carefully into the question of a meeting for patriotic purposes and had decided not to go on with the project because there might easily have been a loss on account of the restrictions on travelling. The election of officers resulted:— Patrons, Messrs W. S. Goosman and W. J. Broadfoot, M’s. P.; president, Mr J. T. Young; vice-presidents, Messrs C. F. Storey, A. R. Kay and A. S. Wallace; committee, Messrs A. Bond, T. Grant, S. C. Macky, S. A. Empson and T. G. Martin; auditor, Mr G. O. Jourdain. The president paid a tribute to the services rendered by Mr W. F. Woodward, the retiring member of the committee.
