CITY OF GLOOM
PARIS UNDER GERMANS FOOD EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE (Times Airmail Service) LONDON, July 19 Reports from Paris in the Lisbon newspaper Novidades paint a dismal picture of life in the French capital under German occupation. Only a quarter of the normal population remains and the general atmosphere is lugubrious, states the Daily Telegraph. Foodstuffs are rare and extremely expensive, and the problem of supplies is most serious. Despite the drop in the population, transport is very difficult. Three Paris morning newspapers, Le Journal, Le Matin and Le Petit Journal, have been printing a joint edition of two pages. Other newspaper offices and printing plants were taken over by the Germans and placed in charge of former Paris correspondents of German newspapers.
