GRADE OF POTATOES
CONSIGNMENTS FROM SOUTH {By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Saturday As a means of stabilising the potato market in the North Island, a regulation has been gazetted on the authority of the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, prescribing that every shipment of potatoes from the South Island to the North Island must be accompanied by a grader’s certificate that the grade is not lower than fair average quality, while seed, potatoes must not be sold for culinary purposes.
The effect will be to eliminate under-grade consignments from the south which, according to Wellington merchants, seriously undercut those of good quality. The latter are being sold wholesale at 6s per cwt., while low-grade potatoes consigned from the south are cleared at a much reduced price.
