ACTIVITIES IN AMERICA PLAN TO REMOVE CREW BOOKS AND PAPERS SEIZED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 The United States Department of Justice revealed plans to remove 451 members of the crew of the German steamer Columbus, scuttled off Virginia on December 20, when intercepted by British destroyers, from the Angel Island immigration station, San Francisco, to a secluded inland spot. The decision is due first to allegations of Fifth Column activity of the crew while on shore leave, and secondly to crowded quarters. Investigators for the Dies Committee, which is inquiring into unAmerican activities, visited the New York offices of the Transocean News Service and seized books and papers. They subpoenard officials to produce other books and papers forthwith. The Transocean Foreign News Service sold at cut rates and was allegedly part of the German propaganda machine.
