Winner 4rained toy 11. M. Tag-g-, A*hliurst. The meeting- opened sensationally when Kaipaki Bill, who g-alloped past the post was Shown as returning- a straight-out priee or close on a century. However, following- a meeting- <>r the stewards It was derided to place him second and the favourite. Avworthy star, first. As It was, Kaipaki Bill paid double figures for a place. Car Bing-en, after leading: for the greater part and showing- the way Into the straight, tangled soon after they straightened up and railed to finish In the money. Car Bingen was the first out and at the completion of a round was In char*-* passing the stands rrom Kaipaki Bill, Gold Ktp and Baby Triumph. Peter Harvester, who had run past Car Bingen at the end of a couple of furlongs and subsequently losing his position through breaking-, being next and still failing to strike a correct gait. Along the hack Gold Kk<had run up to Car Bingen, witli Kaipaki lull handily pIU/ced in front of Axworthy star and Batov Triumph. Car Bingen broke soon after entering the straight where he was being challenged by Axworthy StaT, Kaipaki Bin and Baby Triumph, and In a good finish Kaipaki Bill, who galloped past the post, beat Axworthy Star by a long neck. Gold Kip being two lengths away third. At a gap of another two lengths came Car Bingen, followed by Baby Triumph, Might 'Surprise, Rara Avis and Silver Countess. Winner trained by M. Stewart, Te Rapa. Mitaya led throughout and stayed on solidly to win hand-somefly rrom Rockfel, who hung on to beat Village Maid, who ■came home well. Early Mitaya was followed by Bold Boy, Escobar and Rockfel, and entering the final circuit Mitaya was still in charge from Sparkling Pointer, Bold Boy, Rockfel. Village Maid and Northern Smile. There was little alteration three furlongs from home, Mitaya being followed by Rockrel Into the straight, with Sparkling Pointer handy and Davey Day and Bold Boy at the head of the others. Mitaya held on to win comfortably by one and a-haJr lengths from Rockfel, w-ith village Maid, who came home well, two lengths away. Hair a length further back came Davey Day and then followed Sparkling Pointer, Bold Boy, Northern Smile and Katoomba. Winner trained by R. Dunn, Hemllton. Cloverdale who had been working attractively at Claudelands prior to the meeting, went to the rront rrom the outset and won very convincingly. The favourite, Wbanako, who speedily made up his handicap, was within a length of the winner over the last half-mile and although be challenged strongly in the concluding stages he proved unequal to the winner at the end.
In the early part Cloverdale was followed by Guide Peter and Velvet Cushion, Whanako, from the back, running through smartly and actually lying rourtto from Cloverdale, Magic Task and PearJoro as they passed the stands. Five furlongs from home Cloverdale was clear of WhaiMko, who had moved Into second position. Magic Task, Pearloro, Guide Peter, Rama Direct
and Sir Echo. At the half-mile Whanako ran up behind Cloverdale and this pair was clear Into the straight from Magic Task and Pearloro. In the run home Oloverdala held on to win by two and a-half length* from Whanako, with Guide Peter six lengths away third. Rama Direct was rourt/h and then followed Ayrshire Scott. Passing the stands on the final circuit Hlllcrest was clear of Equipoise, but with live furlongs to go Bold Venture Mad run up behind HlHcresf and this pair was followed now by Molly Direct. Hlllcrest P appeared well ln>lde the distance to have lie race comfortably in hand, when Mollv Direct, finishing on, got up to beat him I>Y a head.
