AWARD OF D.S.O.
NEW ZEALANDER HONOURED COMMAND OF H.M.S. AUCKLAND (By Telegraph.— Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday Commander J. G. Hewitt, son of Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, retired stipendiary magistrate, of Auckland, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of services on the coast of Norway. By coincidence, Commander Hewitt is in command of the escort vessel H.M.S. Auckland. A London Gazette notice describes the award as having been made by the King “for courage and resource in operations on the Norwegian coast.” It is one of seven similar honours given as a result of the same operations. Commander Hewitt has seen service both on the China Station and in, the Persian Gulf. He was appointed commander in 1936, his first ship being a destroyer, H.M.S. Winchelsea. Later he went to the Plans Office of the Admiralty, and was appointed to command H.M.S. Auckland about last February.
